Grammy Whistles & Whammys

Monday, February 9, 2009

I can't help but read up on all the post-Grammy gossip trades from Media Take Out and Yahoo's OMG! to PR Guru Alyson Campbell's blog. Since the Grammy Awards happens to be one of music's most-watched events, I found it fitting to put my two-cents in here at Chrissy and the City.

What I took away from the 2009 Grammys

There was cougar drool for the Brothers Jonas, Carrie Underwood's gorgeous legs giving Mariah a run for her money, M.I.A. depriving every stay-at-home mom the right to complain and a pseudo-reunion of The Four Tops (minus 3 original members, go figure!)...but for me personally, nothing was more notable than Estelle and Kanye's performance of "American Boy".

Those who follow my Facebook updates will note that around 10:30pm last night I declared the "Afro-Mullet" a big mistake! A good friend of mine, Dela Yador, went on to declare it a "Frullet." Ha! While I am truly sympathetic to Mr. West's recent tough times (as revealed through a hauntingly melancholy yet genius 4th album "808s & Heartbreak"), I'm sorry buddy- absolutely nothing warrants social acceptance of the "Frullet"…thanks again Dela!

Luckily, Estelle's whimsical platinum sheath dress, flawless make-up and brilliantly-controlled live vocals saved the performance from Kanye's "Mr. Roboto" dance moves and socially-suicidal hair disaster. I guess it's true what they say "outward expression is a reflection of one's inner self."

On an positive note, I very much enjoyed the speech recognizing President Barack Obama as a 2-time Grammy winner for the voice recording of his book, "Dreams From My Father," which took 15 hours to record. What great publicity for both the Grammy Awards and our very progressive and relatable leader.

So far, the Grammy Awards, with its 51 years of show-stopping glory, takes it's place on Chrissy and the City's Top Events of 2009, snuggly behind the 56th Presidential Inauguration. Not a bad place to be, eh?
